Giant Pumpkins and Happy Birthday John

A Time of Reflection

It’s been awhile since I’ve shared much mostly because I’ve been busy living life but recently I’ve been reflective through this first of October. John’s birthday was the 6th and honestly this week has been a hard one for the entire time I have known him and beyond.

His Dad died right before his first birthday and because of that he always hated the beginning of October. It was always when he was at his most depressed as he considered what he lost and what he never had as a result. The one consolation I have of him being gone this time of year is he’s not around to be sad about it, but I was.

Luckily I have a good support network and a very good boyfriend to get me through it. The two of us celebrated it for him where I am but we weren’t the only ones living for him that day. His Nana was eating red vines and drinking his favorite pop code red. My Mexican dad in Acapulco went to goat tacos (our favorite) and then Burger Queen (our pre-carnivore favorite). So he had people all over celebrating for him.

Then I wrote the post I’ll link below for the homestead Guru and I was reminded of our combined love for giant pumpkins. For him it was personal because his uncle is an award winning giant pumpkin grower. He taught me what he learned from asking questions and I used that combined with the internet to make the post below.

I asked his nana for some photos, one of which is included in this post and the one on the guru. The one that really got me was the one above, John as a kid in a pumpkin jail. It was an emotional sucker punch for a few reasons, a boys life cut short and it was metaphorical because we likely wouldn’t have come here in the way we did had it not been for jail. So thanks for that, drug war.

Anyway it was the suckerpunch I needed to get refocused on telling our story, both here and for the book I plan to release as a sort of tell all. Stay tuned for more frequent updates.
